Garowe, Somalia – President Said Abdullahi Deni voiced apprehension over the recent political developments taking place in the SSC-Khatumo regions and their potential impact on Puntland’s involvement in the finalization of the Somali constitution.
Deni emphasized that the completion of the constitution and the establishment of a robust legal framework for the country could only be achieved once the conflict between SSC-Khatumo and Somaliland is effectively resolved.
The announcement made in February by the traditional elders of Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn, collectively known as SSC-Khatumo, regarding their intent to form an independent federal state in Somalia under the name SSC-Khatumo, set the stage for a complex and challenging political landscape.
Just days ago, the federal government officially confirmed its collaboration with the newly appointed leaders of the SSC-Khatumo administration, signaling its recognition of the emerging entity.
In a bid to address the pressing needs of the SSC-Khatumo areas, the federal government has also pledged its commitment to enhancing essential social services, including education, healthcare, and water supply, while simultaneously tackling broader humanitarian concerns. However, Somaliland continues to assert its determination to launch an offensive to reclaim Las Anod, the current administrative capital of the SSC administration, further complicating the situation.
President Deni did not mince his words as he criticized the leaders of the federal government for their actions, which he perceives as undermining the unity of the country. Deni expressed his concern.
“The recent agreement reached at the National Consultative Forum exemplified how the leaders of Somalia are endangering the nation and disregarding the federal system.” Deni said.
His strong opposition was directed towards the proposed elimination of the Prime Minister’s role in favor of a presidential system, as well as the suggestion to limit political competition to just two parties vying for power in the country.
