Ethiopia on Wednesday released its opposition leader Dr. Merera Gudina after spending more than one year as a political prisoner.
The leader of the Oromo Federalist Congress was arrested in December 2016 to face terror-linked charges.
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn had on January 3rd announced that the country would pardon political prisoners in reaction to a two year long protests in the Oromo and Amhara regions.
Thousands of his supporters lined up the roads leading to his home in Burayyu outside the capital Addis Ababa.
“He once said my people will set me free. Today he is free†Hassan Mohamed an Ethiopian told Radio Dalsan.
Ethiopians have been calling for political changes in the country putting the government under pressure and on the scope of human rights groups.
