Somalia National Army Special forces on Friday night conducted an operation near Leego in the Lower Shabelle killing at least 10 Alshaabab militants, a statement from the government claims.
Major General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh who commands the Danab Special Forces told an SNA owned radio station that the operation saw the destruction of the biggest Alshabaab base in the region.
The operation targeted checkpoints manned by the militant group said to finance Alshabaab through extortions.
This area is where most of the terror activities were planned. We destroyed several checkpoints where the militants were extorting money from the public†Maj. Abdullahi told the SNA owned radio.
Defence Minister Mr Mohamed Mursal also confirmed of the operation through his Twitter account.
Leego has been under the control of AlShabaab militants since the withdrawal of Uganda Amisom troops last August.
