A top Somali military officer has been killed in fighting between Somalia troops and Kenya’s Anti-Terror Unit near the border town of El Wak on Friday, Radio Dalsan reports.

Heavy gunfire erupted close to thirty minutes when both sides mistook each other for being Alshabaab fighters, a Gedo region official told Radio Dalsan.

The officer killed is identified as Mohamed Aden Yusuf the former chief of Security in El Wak.

Several were injured on both sides.

Then Kenyan troops were said to be in three vehicles reportedly with flags identified with militant group Alshabaab.

The El Wak border region has in the last two weeks seen a buildup of military activities by Alshabaab which has been crossing over into Kenya to execute attacks targeting government security personnel.
