Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

The U.S. Mission to Somalia strongly condemns the June 5 assassination of Somali National Television and Radio Mogadishujournalist Sagal Salad Osman in Mogadishu.

The United States extends sincere condolences to Ms. Osman’s family, friends, and colleagues and salutes the courage of Somali journalists, who, day in and day out, struggle to defend the inalienable right of freedom of expression on behalf of the Somali people.

The United States urges the Federal Government of Somalia to bring the perpetrators to justice and redouble its efforts to end the culture of impunity and violence that threatens both the lives of Somalis and their universally recognized right to freedom of expression.
