President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday visited Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers who were injured in the Al Shabaab attack on African Union Mission in Somalia’s (AMISOM) El Adde base last Friday.
The Head of State, who is also the Commander-In Chief of the Armed Forces, spent time with the families of soldiers who were killed or injured in the Shabaab attack prior to speaking at an event held in honor of the slain soldiers.
The soldiers, who are recuperating at the Armed Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi, interacted one-on-one with President Kenyatta, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, opposition leader Raila Odinga, members of the diplomatic core as well as other leaders from across the country.
A week ago, Al Shabaab militants overran an AMISOM base in El Adde, Somalia killing and injuring an unknown number of soldiers. Shortly after, the army sent troops on a search and rescue mission, with others targeting the masterminds of the attack.
Speaking to members of the press on Thursday, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Samson Mwathethe said that he believed the man behind the El Adde raid was killed in the retaliatory attacks.
The number of soldiers killed in the attack remains unknown.
