73 years old former military general and a Muslim from the North is the new Nigerian President.

General Muhammadu Buhari has won Nigeria’s presidential polls, in the country’s first election victory by the opposition.

General Buhari contested four times before since the end of military rule in the country 1999.

The incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan immediately conceded defeat and congratulated the new president.

The spokesman for Gen Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party praised Mr Jonathan for accepting defeat and described him as a hero for the move.

This is the first time that opposition has come to power since transition to civilian rule.
