Tukaraq Wakes To Tension After Renewed Fighting

Tension is rife in Tukaraq a day after Somaliland and Puntland clashed near the disputed town, Radio Dalsan reports.

Residents are reporting troop build up on both sides in anticipation of farther military confrontation.

Puntland’s Sool region Governor Dahir Mohamed told Radio Dalsan that fighting is likely to resume.

“It’s near Tukaraq town where they are holding positions. And so far no party has intervened whether community elders or governments. The only solution is Somaliland to leave the area,” Mohamed said.

On Sunday fighting resumed outside the town in the disputed Sool region with casualties reported.

Regional block IGAD called on both sides to cease hostilities in a communique issued on Saturday.

Somaliland captured the strategic town of Tukaraq from Puntland forces on January 8.
