50 AlShabaab Militants Defected Since Ex Leader Robow’s Surrender

Over 50 AlShabaab fighters have defected since August 2017, Somalia government officials have said.

The latest AlShabaab fighter to defect was on Friday displayed to the media in Burhakaba in the Bay region of South West State.

He was identified as Ibrahim Hassan Ali by South West State authorities and displayed to the media.

The rise in the number of militants surrendering to the government has been attributed to the defection of former Deputy leader of Al Shabaab Mukhtar Robow Abu Mansoor.

Robow’s defection was seen as a major blow to AlShabaab who’s significant number of fighters originate from his home region of Bay and Bakool.
