Two Somali nationals were on Wednesday rescued from the hands of smugglers from the Libyan town of Bani Walid, Somali officials currently visiting the North African country have told Radio Dalsan.
The two young men in their late teens managed to escape from weeks of torture at a smuggler´s camp.
They arrived in Tripoli emaciated and are currently been hospitalized.
“Thank you @IOM_Libya supported by #EU We managed to give rapid medical intervention, hospitalisation for 2 Somali young men who escaped from Human Traffickers” Mariam Yassin Somalia´s Special envoy for migrants tweeted on Thursday.
A Somali government delegation led by Somali envoy to the European Union Dr.Ali Faqi and Commissioner of Refugees and IDPs Ahmed Nur is currently in Libya seeking to repatriate nationals stranded.
Two months ago President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo personally ordered the then Foreign Affairs minister Yusuf Garad to facilitate the repatriation of hundreds of Somali migrants allegedly enslaved in Libya following shocking reports of slavery in the country.
Graphic photos and videos of Somalis tortured in smugglers camps outraged the public back in Somalia.
Other African countries including Nigeria have successfully returned their nationals back after rescue from alleged Libyan slave markets.
