Authorities in Puntland have arrested a senior Darawiish military officer days after he publicly spoke out about unpaid salaries and worsening living conditions facing soldiers in Garowe.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdirahman Abdirisaaq Wayrah was detained after raising alarm over what he described as a deepening humanitarian and financial crisis within sections of the Puntland security forces.
In recent media remarks, the officer claimed that some members of the Darawiish forces had gone for up to 24 months without receiving salaries, warning that the situation had severely affected the morale, welfare and health of the troops stationed at the 54th military camp in Garowe.
Wayrah further alleged that several officers had recently died after being discharged from hospitals due to inability to meet medical costs, painting a grim picture of conditions facing soldiers and their families.
Family members told local media that the officer was summoned to the 54th camp headquarters on Saturday afternoon before being taken into custody.
Sources within the security forces who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed the arrest order originated from the Puntland presidency, although authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the detention.
The arrest has triggered widespread debate across Puntland, with critics accusing authorities of silencing officers who speak publicly about the challenges facing the military.
The development comes amid growing complaints from sections of Puntland’s security forces over delayed salaries, poor welfare and lack of essential services.
