The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, Bashir Mohamed Jama, conducted an official field visit to several districts and communities in the Galmudug State. The purpose of the visit was to assess the ongoing drought, the effects of climate change, and the living conditions of communities in both rural and urban areas of the region.
During the visit, Minister Bashir, accompanied by the Galmudug Minister of Environment, paid special attention to the town of Bud-bud, one of the areas most severely affected by climate-related challenges. The town is experiencing significant environmental impact, with sand encroachment covering parts of homes, causing serious hardship for the affected families.
As part of his field mission, Minister Bashir held an awareness session with local residents and pastoralist communities. The discussion focused on the dangers of deforestation and environmental degradation. He warned that continued tree cutting and damage to the ecosystem could lead to severe long-term consequences for both people and the environment.
In his address, Minister Bashir emphasized that addressing drought and climate change is not a responsibility for the Ministry alone. He called for full participation from all segments of society, government institutions, and other stakeholders. He urged the people of Galmudug, as well as all Somalis, to take an active role in protecting and preserving the environment for current and future generations.
The visit underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling climate change, raising public awareness, and promoting sustainable environmental practices across Somalia.
